Expedition Leader:

Naomi Dodds

Naomi Dodds is currently a second year medical student studying at Swansea College of Medicine. She is president of Swansea Wilderness Medicine Society, a keen mountaineer, and an active member of the local Mountain Rescue team. She has been lucky enough to travel to captivating across the globe as Leader and Medic on multiple expeditions with the Dorset Expeditionary Society and Leading Edge Expeditions. She is very much looking forward to combining her passion for medicine and exploration in her next big adventure Expedition Altiplano 2012.

Research Leader:

Professor Damian Miles Bailey PhD

Professor Bailey embarked on his PhD thesis while studying at the British Olympic Medical Centre in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry at Oxford University. As an ex-international athlete, his personal interests encouraged him to focus on the factors that control oxygen transport to the human brain and its impact on exercise performance across the spectrum of health and disease. Since his appointment as the youngest Professor in his specialist field in the UK, he has over 150 publications and was the recipient of The Wellcome Trust Young Investigator Award for his work on “free radicals” and the “high-altitude brain” having led medical research expeditions to the Himalayas, Russia and South America. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, American College of Sports Medicine and Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute, physiologist to the British Free Diving Association and holds honorary Professorships at the Universities of Aix-Marseille (France) and Innsbruck (Austria). He is currently Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of Glamorgan where he leads the Neurovascular Research Laboratory.
